There are more complicated and sophisticated descriptions of what domains are but
simply put, domains are the main web address for your website.
Think about an apartment building as a main address. In order for friends and family to
find your apartment, they would need the exact address. Let's say that you lived at 110
Jameson Ave. 110 Jameson Ave would be referred to as your main address. Now in
order for your friends to actually find your unit they will need the unit number. Let's say
you lived in apartment #304, then your full address would be: 110 Jameson Ave, unit
#304.
The web is no different. In order for visitors to first find you they will need the main
address to your website. Using the above example, 110 Jameson Ave would be the main
address (main domain) and apartment #304 would be your actual unit's location (web
page).
Take a look at the address field in your browser at the top of this page. It should read:
http://networkopportunities.net/domain-names.html.
The main domain name for this website is: networkOpportunities.net.
Now this website has many different pages. You can not find this specific page if you
typed in the main domain networkopportunities.net alone into your browser.
You would have to include the page or unit location as well: /domain-names.html.
If I wanted to share this page with someone so that they could read this article, I would
have to copy and paste the address above and send it to them in an email.
In order to direct website traffic to a specific web page or website that you want to
promote, you will need a domain name to direct them to by means of advertising.
